Roar On the Tigers for the Double
Posted on 11th May 2009
Skipper and man-of-the-match Geordan Murphy hailed Leicester Tigers’ Guinness Premiership title as a “special feeling.”
The 31-year-old Irishman led from the front as Tigers put in a courageous display to beat London Irish 10-9 and be crowned champions of England for a record eighth time in front of 81,601 at Twickenham.
“It is a very special feeling to win and even more so having had the honour of leading the team out,” he said ““We were the best team throughout the year and finished top of the league.”
“Our congratulations go out to the entire team and we wish the Tigers the best of luck to do-the-double,” said Erika Hardy, Marketing Manager at Everards.
The 40 strong team will be enjoying their victory but celebrations are likely to be kept low-key as the Tigers prepare for the double on Saturday’s European showdown against Leinster in the Heineken Cup Final.

It’s been an exciting and action packed season for our friends at Welford Road but there’s still plenty more to come as the Leicester Tigers prepare for battle in both Heineken Cup and Guinness Premiership finals.
The Tigers triumphed to a 24-10 victory against Bath over the weekend which means they will now be playing London Irish in their fifth consecutive premiership final. Tries from Dan Hipkiss, Sam Vesty and Lewis Moody helped the Tigers record a fourth victory over their rivals in five meetings this season.
Brian Cockeril, Head Coach for the Leicester Tigers, commented:
“Whatever happens in the next fortnight, we have had a good year, but the hunger for battle in the dressing room is still strong. You don’t get the feeling that we are thinking ‘We have got to two finals, that’s great.”
The team will meet London Irish at Twickenham on Saturday (16th May), seven days before they head to Edinburgh to battle with Leinster in the Heineken Cup final.
Erika Hardy, marketing manager for Everards Brewery, said:
‘Reaching two cup finals this season is fantastic. On behalf of all of us here at the brewery and our customers, we would like to wish the players the best of luck in both competitions.’
