Pram Pushers Raise Money For Children's Ward
Posted on 11th January 2010
The one mile race, organised by Lisa and Tim Brotherhood, licensees of The Elephant and Castle, saw the mad-cap villagers don their fancy dress and get round the course in homemade prams, trolleys and non-motorised vehicles!
Lisa said: “It was a great day that brought all the community together. Families have started coming from all over the UK to spend Boxing Day with local relatives to watch the pram race.
“The whole village gets involved either cheering on the competitors or manning the forfeit stations along the route. The atmosphere during the race was fantastic and then everyone headed to the pub for drinks and hot soup and rolls afterwards.
“We’ve been running the pub for 18 months and so it was our second pram race but the tradition dates back to fifties. The effort people go to is amazing and we certainly will be doing it again next year. We had over 30 participants with fancy dress ranging from Marge and Homer Simpson to Dracula – complete with coffin!”
The Elephant and Castle chose to raise money in memory of local villager, James Brotherhood, who sadly lost his life last May following an accident that caused a blood clot on his brain. He also suffered a brain tumour when he was nine and spent a lot of time at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.
James’ mum, Suzanne Brotherhood, who supports the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Child Brain Injury Trust, said: “Before James died he said he wanted to raise money to buy the children’s ward new televisions. We are so grateful to The Elephant and Castle for their donation. The pram race was a great day and the money is still coming in.”
The Child Brain Injury Trust is a UK-wide charity offering support, information and training on childhood acquired brain injury.
Erika Hardy, Marketing Manager for Everards, said: “We are really thrilled with the effort The Elephant and Castle and its locals have put into organising and taking part in fundraising events. It’s great for all the family.”
