Hearty Goodfellow Picks Up Pub Of The Year Award

Posted on 1st March 2010

The pub on Church Street, received the accolade from the Newark branch of CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale.

Licensee Alison Ryan, who runs the pub with her partner Steve Hussey, took over the pub in January 2009.

Alison puts their success down to enthusiasm for real ale and creating a pub that is part of the village. She said: “From the start our vision was to create a welcoming pub atmosphere for everyone in the community. We are really proud to have achieved this and to be recognised for it by CAMRA.

“Our customers tell us how much they love the wide range of real ales we serve. We always have guest beers on draught and there is a new beer on nearly every day.”

The pub hosted a successful three-day beer festival last June in conjunction with two other local pubs and they are planning to the same this summer. They also got involved with their local folk festival and live bands played in their large beer garden.

Newark CAMRA’s Paul Murphy said: “The Hearty Goodfellow is a very deserving winner. Alison and Steve always present an exceptional range of real ales alongside a warm welcome and friendly ambience.”
