Posted on 27th May 2009

Local pub regulars teamed up to make a splash at last weekend’s dragon boat race in aid of Loughborough Women’s Aid.

The 10 strong team from Everards’ Soar Bridge Inn pub in Barrow upon Soar competed alongside 21 teams at the all day event which took place on Sunday. Crews raced 30 foot brightly painted Chinese boats over a 200m course on the river.

John Rozentals, licensee of the Soar Bridge Inn, said: “Some of my regulars approached me and were really enthusiastic about taking part and asked if Everards would be happy to sponsor them, which of course they were.”

Everards has supplied the team with branded t-shirts and the group, aged between 20-55, decided to keep the theme running by having their faces painted as tigers in honour of Everards’ famous Tiger bitter. They have also pledged to raise £500 for Loughborough Women’s Aid between them.

Spectators watched throughout the day and entertainment on the bank included a bouncy castle, children’s canoe trips, tombola raffle and a penalty shoot-out.

Chris Jacobs, director of Loughborough Women’s Aid, said: “We are delighted that so many local companies and organisations supported the event and through their generosity we hope to raise a significant sum for Loughborough Women’s Aid.
