Hoards Of Helpers Descend On The Vikings Tun...

Posted on 1st June 2009

Regulars at the pub in Wigston, Leicester volunteered to roll up their sleeves and help transform their local in just three days.

The makeover at the Vikings Tun included the creation of a larger beer garden with children’s playground, carvery serving area for Sunday lunches and a brighter, more welcoming bar.

Natalie said: “We have been running the Vikings Tun for nearly two years and were looking for a way to freshen it up and improve the facilities for our customers.

“Everards offered to support us both financially and with business building ideas, plus staff from the brewery came along to lend a hand with the refurbishment work.

“When our regulars heard about the plans they also volunteered to help, which was extremely kind and satisfying for us to know that their local meant that much to them.

“Nine customers in total helped with the decorating and clearing up and in just three days we were finished and ready to open.”

As part of the scheme the bar area was repainted, table tops replaced and seating steam cleaned. A new carvery has been installed to enable the pub to offer Sunday lunches for the first time.

Outside, Natalie and Sean opened up their private garden area to make it part of the pub’s beer garden, increasing its size by around a third. All the outdoor furniture was sanded and painted and a new gate was added to make the garden and play area secure.

Natalie said: “Customers have been very impressed with the improvements we have made and the new carvery will help the business grow.

“Between ourselves and the brewery we put a lot of effort into the project, but the real difference came from the goodwill and support from everyone who helped complete the work in such a short space of time.
