Everards welcomes the Australian Cricket Team to Leicester!
Posted on 9th June 2009
As avid cricket fans – we are, after all, the preferred beer supplier to Leicestershire County Cricket Club – Everards has been closely following the action at the World Twenty20.
But even we were hit for six when Australian captain Ricky Ponting reacted glumly at the prospect of spending two long weeks in Leicester preparing for the Ashes after his squad were knocked out of the tournament by Sri Lanka.
Today’s Daily Mail quotes Ponting as saying: “If we’re knocked out, we’ll be spending about a fortnight in Leicester…and that won’t be too great for anyone.”
Now come on chaps, you may not be bowled over about yesterday’s defeat but that’s no reason to lash out at our beloved home city. The team chose to come to Leicester and have use of the fantastic facilities at the Leicestershire County Cricket ground on Grace Road.
There’s plenty to keep the players occupied in between sessions at the nets. Here are some of our suggestions…
1. Drown your sorrows. Visit one of hundreds of brilliant pubs in and around the city and (responsibly) enjoy a pint or two of locally brewed Everards ales. Our favourites include the Old Horse on London Road, which boasts a garden the size of a football pitch, and the Globe on Silver Street and the Marquis Wellington on London Road with their choice of refreshing cask beers on tap- see www.everards.co.uk/pubs/
2. Go on tour. Not around the world, but around our Castle Acres brewery, where our finest brews including Tiger, Beacon and Sunchaser are lovingly crafted
3. Get some space. Visit the National Space Centre, the UK’s largest attraction dedicated to space exploration. It might help the players plan a fast getaway if the Ashes goes as badly as the World Twenty20… click here for more information
4. Try retail therapy. Highcross Leicester boasts around 120 shops, restaurants, cafes and a cinema. Meanwhile the trendy boutiques and independent shops of the Leicester Lanes will satisfy the cravings of any label junkie- Visit their website here
5. Curry favour with the locals. Known as the Golden Mile, Belgrave Road is renowned for its selection of authentic Indian restaurants, as well as sari shops and jewellers-click here for more information
6. Let someone else take centre stage. Take in a performance at Curve, Leicester’s state of the art theatre on Rutland Street. The building’s stunning glass facade means the stage can be seen from the street outside, while its two auditoria can seat audiences of up to 750 and 350 respectively- click here for more information
7. Enjoy the park life. Bradgate Park is Leicestershire’s largest country park comprising of 840 acres of land with grass, heath, bracken, woods, herds of deer and the River Lin- Click here for more information
8. Seek sanctuary. The stunning Cathedral Church of St Martin’s offers a warm welcome for everyone and is well known for its bell ringing. A perfect place to escape from critical fans and the media alike- click here to visit their website
9. Go into battle. Rivalry in the sport can be pretty epic, but close to Leicester in Market Bosworth is the Heritage Centre for Bosworth Battlefield. It gives an interpretation of the historic Battle of Bosworth and a fascinating insight into life in medieval times- click here for more information
10. Be brave. Prove your mettle by spending an evening in a haunted building. Visitors can take part in a ‘ghost watch’ at the Guildhall in Leicester or Leicester Castle
