Pedal Power Raises Money For Children's Hospice

Staff and regulars from the Aberdale pub on Shackerdale Road in Knighton, Leicester, saddled up for a week’s riding on a static bicycle in aid of the charity.
Customers were then asked to pay £1 and guess how many miles the bike had covered, with a meal including wine on offer for whoever got the closest.
Guesses ranged from a lowly 50 miles to rather ambitious 2,600 – in the end, the team managed a respectable 250 and the prize meal went to regulars Mr and Mrs John McDonagh.
Brian Morris, who has run the Aberdale with wife Lynne for three and a half years, said: “We nominate a local charity every year and then try to do all sorts of weird and wacky fundraising events to collect money for them.
“It’s difficult when times are tough but nevertheless everyone has been tremendously supportive, both by getting on the bike and paying to guess to mileage.
“One customer managed to clock up 32 miles during one visit to the pub, although he was pretty saddle sore when he got off!”
Already this year, the Aberdale has held an Easter bonnet parade on behalf of Rainbows, as well as an egg tossing competition.
“Rainbows is a really deserving cause and most of us have heard about their vital work through experiences with a friend or family member,” added Brian. “We know the money we raise will be put to good use.”
Rainbows is a purpose built children’s hospice in Loughborough which offers a range of services for children, young people and their families from the East Midlands affected by life limiting and life threatening conditions.
Care is offered by a strong team of nurses, carers, therapists and doctors, ranging from specialist respite stays to end of life care.
