Cheers All Round As Sir J.B Warren Is Named One Of Britains Best Pubs
Posted on 17th June 2009
The Sir John Borlase Warren in Canning Circus featured in a list of the 100 best summer pubs as judged by writers from the Guardian and Observer.
The pub was praised for its ‘living-room feel with stylish, comfortable furnishings’ and a sunny terrace that really ‘draws the punters’. Its real ale, which includes Everards’ summer tipple Sunchaser Blonde, was also ‘superbly kept’.
Licensee Graham Shaw, who took over the Sir John nine years ago, said he was thrilled with the listing.
He said: “I’m not sure exactly how we were selected, but I’m obviously pleased we were because recognition like this on a national level carries a great deal of kudos.
“We had people coming in the same day the article was published saying they had read about us and wanted to experience our offer for themselves.”
The pub’s food also got an honorary mention in the Observer, including its traditional bar snacks supplied by the local butcher, such as pork pies, scotch eggs and sausage rolls, plus its popular Sunday lunches.
“What also makes this pub great is the friendly atmosphere and eclectic mix of people of all different ages who love to eat and drink here,” added Graham.
The Sir John takes its name from Sir John Borlase Warren, an English admiral, politician and diplomat who was born in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire, in 1753.
