All Change For Sir Barnes Wallis
Posted on 14th June 2010
The Sir Barnes Wallis (formerly The Woodman) in Ripley is being run as an innovative partnership between Everards and Amber Ales based in Hammersmith, Derbyshire.
The pub launches with a special exclusive brew from Amber Ales, The Water Buoys.
Members from Watersafe UK Search and Rescue Team (WUKSART) joined Amber Ales’ newest recruit, 21 year old brewer Rachel Clark to create the bitter. For every pint sold 10p will be donated towards new equipment for WUKSART.
New licensee Pete Hounsell said: “We are really excited to be opening the pub in conjunction with Everards and its unique Project William initiative. We are really grateful for the support we are given by them.
“We chose the name Sir Barnes Wallis as he is Ripley’s local hero most famous for inventing the bouncing bomb used by the RAF in World War II. We have very little in town to commemorate his achievements and so what better way than with his own pub!”
The busy opening weekend included something for all the family – face painting for the kids and a hog roast for all the family. World-record holder John Evans was there to entertain the crowds by balancing 200 pints of beer, followed by a mini, on his head!
The pub, which was built in the early 1970s, has been extensively refurbished and will now offer a selection of real ales along with pub food made from local produce including Amber Ale sausages and pies.
Pete added: “High quality ale and food are very important to us. We will be offering a phone through service at lunchtimes to ensure local businesses and staff from the local schools and hospital can pop in for a speedy lunch.”
The Sir Barnes Wallis is Amber Ales’ second pub and joins the nearby Talbot. The brewery produces nine different ales. Its best-selling ale, Barnes Wallis is styled as an easy-drinking IPA-style bitter, copper-coloured for a full malt flavour and hopped with Northern Brewer and spicy Syrian Goldings.
