Golfers Raise £6k In Memory Of Captain's Daughter

Posted on 16th August 2010

Golfers and the neighbouring community turned out to support the event at the Admiral Rodney in Calverton to raise money for the children’s charity When You Wish Upon A Star.

Captain of the village golf society, Andrew Miller, organised the golf competition for 64 members during the day to play for the Isla Rose Trophy, named in memory of his daughter who passed away at 21 weeks during pregnancy.

After the game, the golfers headed back for a celebratory BBQ and then began their biddings on a range of items including a signed and framed photograph of Alan Shearer, boxing gloves signed by Frank Bruno, a romantic UK break, and more unusually, 16lbs of ironing collected, pressed and delivered back to your door!

Licensees Elaine and Peter Delaney have run the Admiral Rodney for three years and were delighted to host the event.

Elaine says: “It was a pleasure to be involved in such a fantastic evening and lovely to see everyone being so generous with their bids.

“Andrew has worked so hard and should be very proud of what he has achieved.”

Andrew said: “The day was brilliant and I am overwhelmed at the support I received but I could not have done any of this without my friends and family who helped make the day run smoothly.

“It’s great that the weather held off for the golf competition and we even got a guest visit from ex Nottingham Forest captain, John McGovern.

After hearing about the family’s loss, colleagues at the company where Andrew works decided to name a star after Isla Rose.

Andrew added: “As there is now a star named after our baby girl, it seemed appropriate to raise money for a charity called When You Wish Upon A Star and am thrilled to be handing over a large sum of money that will be able to make the wishes of terminally ill children come true.”

Andrew is also set to run Nottingham’s Robin Hood half marathon which he hopes will add to the fundraising total.

When You Wish Upon A Star is a Nottingham based charity that aims to grant the wishes of sick children. It has provided terminally ill children with dream holidays to Disneyland, trips to see Santa in Lapland and the chance to meet their celebrity heroes.
