Viking's Raise Funds For Heroes

Posted on 27th July 2009

The Vikings Tun organised the special day for the one-year anniversary of Warrant Officer 2nd Class Dan Shirley’s death, which also coincided with the UK’s first ‘Armed Forces’ day. The pub raised over £1,500 for the charity which supports those who are wounded in the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Licensee Sean Grace and his partner, landlady Natalie Spencer, along with help from their regulars and Dan’s family, organised a community day in the large pub garden with a bbq, bouncy castle, penalty shoot-out and raffle.

Sean said: “Dan lived literally a stone’s throw from the pub and everybody around here knew who he was so we wanted to do something for the soldiers and their families that have suffered from the war.

“The anniversary of Dan’s death was exactly a year to the day on the national ‘Armed Forces’ day so we all got involved to help raise money for such a worthwhile cause, which was a very moving but beneficial day.”

Prizes for the raffle were donated by the community and included a signed Liverpool FC shirt, signed Leicester City memorabilia, a champion boxer’s glove and home-made hampers.

Dan, a married father of two, from 13 Air Assault Support Regiment Royal Logistic Corps died in a patrol accident in Afghanistan after 16 years of service. His wife Michelle carried out a sponsored parachute jump on the morning of the event, raising a large amount of money for the charity.
