Do You Know Your Onions?

Posted on 3rd October 2011

Regulars have shown they know their onions by producing an array of wild and wonderful shapes and designs for the Fox & Goose, Ilston-on-the-Hill annual Onion Sunday competition.

The day saw many village competitors take part in the fundraising event at the Fox & Goose pub in Ilston-on-the-hill to find the biggest, best three matching and best novelty onion in the village. This year’s event raised over £5,500 for charity.

Kenneth Hague, who took over as the pub licensee around 11 months ago, has carried on the Onion Sunday tradition following 15 years of previous events. Onion Sunday was initiated by the pubs previous licensee and has raised over £50,000 in total.

Kenneth said: “When we took over the pub, it was very obvious that Onion Sunday was a particularly valued and loved event by the village. It’s a very popular event and has become a tradition for many of our customers and the local villagers.”

This was my first Onion Sunday since running the pub and we are delighted that we’ve managed to keep it a success and raise a considerable amount for charity. It was a lot of fun and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

Proceeds made from all of the event activities including an auction, a Bring and Buy sale, a “guess the weight of a cake” competition and an all day bar and beef cobs, will be split between the local village hall and Leicestershire based charity, ProstAid.
