Skills for running a pub

OK, some of this may sound really obvious, but there are a few things you need to think about before applying for a pub….

If you are a complete novice, have you worked behind a bar before?
If you haven’t, give it a go before you think about taking on a pub. We offer a ‘try before you buy’ experience weekend where you get to experience all aspects of pub life.

Can you hold a licence?
The local council grants personal licences so people can serve alcohol. As part of the process the police check everyone’s application. If you are not sure whether you would be granted a licence it might be a good idea to find out by talking to the police, a solicitor or by giving us a call.

Are you a people person?
You know they say you can choose your friends but not your family? Well unfortunately it’s the same with customers. You need to be friendly and approachable but also have a firm side to prevent any sensitive situations getting out of hand.

Can you cope with hard work?
It takes a lot of hard work and long hours to run a pub, it’s not all chatting to customers and pulling pints! You need to be committed to making your business a success and 14 hour days are not uncommon.

Do you have management skills?
Unless you really are going to work all day every day and do everything yourself, you will need to be prepared to manage and develop staff.

You may inherit these people with the pub or they may be people you interview and employ but you will need to be able to manage your team, setting customer service standards, providing training etc. Their career and development is in your hands.
